How To Become A VE

To become a VE (Volunteer Examiner) you must 18 years old and hold a General Class license or higher. That is not saying that if you hold a Technician class that you can not be of great assistance to us. More on that later.

The Las Vegas area VE team is accredited by the ARRL-VEC. The ARRL-VEC requires that all prospective VEs take an open book exam. After you've taken this exam, you can mail in the exam, along with your application form, to the ARRL-VEC. Within approximately 3 weeks you should receive your badge and accreditation papers. It is your responsibility to notify us that you have received your accreditation. It is unfortunate, but the ARRL-VEC does not inform us when you've become accredited. So without you telling us, we have no way of knowing.

After you've become an accredited VE, this VE team does not expect you to be at every test session. However, we do expect you to be an active participant. Approximately 2 weeks before the upcoming test session you'll receive a general e-mail announcement announcing the session and asking for volunteers. Please notify us whether you can participate or not. This way we know who to call, or not call, if we are short VE's for that session.

If you are a Technician class your participation would be greatly appreciated too. There are functions at the test sessions that do not require VE status. Please contact us either via phone or e-mail and let us know your desire to help. You'll be added to our e-mail announcement (as I described earlier).
